Hello Kittens!
Mariah and I had an absolute blast on our trip out to Salem with our littles. From a midnight pick up at Lambert Airport, to a three day trek across the United States, and then a signing filled with readers, writers and friends, I can definitely call our trip nothing but epic.
Starting out in Southern Illinois, we drove across into Indiana and then stopped in Ohio for the night. Then we sprinted from Ohio all the way to Salem, so that we could wake up on the beach. My youngest, Bucky, had never been outside of Illinois and Missouri before, so it was an adventure for us all.
He is a beach baby if ever there was one. He loved the sand, searched for shells and sea glass, ran through the waves, and all around never wanted to leave. He and Mariah’s daughter were thick as thieves. Best friends from the word go. The two of us where blown away by how well the two of them got along for the entire eight day trip.
They danced the night away at the Witch’s Ball. Where the talk of the signing, and generally did their best to charm everyone.
As cute as the kids where, they were not the reason (or all of the reason) for our epic trip. Our reason for loading up the truck and camping our way across half of the country was the signing itself.
Mariah and I signed on Sunday at the Getting Witchy With It 2023 Author Signing. We got to meet hundreds of readers, chatted with fellow authors, and got to meet some long time friends and fans in person for the first time.
The signing itself was a blur of readers, and conversation, selling books, and handing out charms and business cards. The kids assisted with everything, and even gave away a few things that probably should have stayed on the table 🤭.
The joy of getting to meet people who we have only been able to talk to online was immeasurable. And both Mariah and I will be back for Getting Witchy With It 2024, this time signing on Saturday… And having our own tables, cause man were they cramped!
On the way home we made a slight detour and headed up into Vermont. We stopped off in Burlington to check out Church Street and visit a few sights that you all might recognize from my Lords of Khaos series. We had dinner at RiRa, a wonderful Irish Pub on Church Street, walked down to the shop that I have turned into Bella’s Books in Malachai. We walked to Yankee Tattoo, which I renamed House of Ink, run by our favorite book daddy, Les. Sadly we missed the guys at Yankee, who closed before we managed to get there, but I did leave them a signed copy of Lesleigh, which they have thanked me for.
Heading back through upstate New York turned into a bit of a challenge, when we realized that all camp sights are state run, and you have to book your place before 3pm. Sadly we found this out at about 10:30 at night, driving around Ticonderoga New York, without a solid plan for what we would be doing that evening.
After driving through the winding roads of New York, in the rain and fog, we finally made it to a truck stop, where we car camped. Introducing both Bucky and I to truck stop showering was a very interesting new adventure, though I can safely say that it had the best water pressure of any shower I have ever experienced.
We had to stop in Buffalo, and have real Buffalo Wings, in honor of our newest book baby Wing Witch.
Finally, we pulled into our last campsite (found on Hipcamp). A little farm in eastern Ohio, it was the perfect place for our final night out on the road.
It was the prefect place to settle in for the final night on the road. Mariah is a camping pro, and not only made the fire, but the delicious dinner that we shared with our littles. The night was cool, but beautiful—we had the best weather on this trip, up to and including the “hurricane” that blew through—and our final night was no exception.
We just wanted to to thank all the readers who came, all the authors who chatted with us, and everyone else we saw along the way.
It’s My Birthday!
